Clinical Ethics: Best Practices in an Evolving World
Course Objectives:
This workshop is designed as a mid to advanced level professional ethics training for social workers, counselors, therapists, psychologists, and other mental health clinicians. It is intended as:
- A review of fundamental ethical principles, as affected by the evolving social, cultural, legal, ethical and technological landscape facing 21st Century mental health clinicians;
- A functional exploration of the developing ethical, legal, and risk management issues in today’s clinical environment.
The course will prepare attendees to:
- Recognizing the foundational principles underlying today’s ethics codes and regulations and how they are evolving to meet the demands and expectations of today’s profession and consuming public;
- Improving awareness of ethical issues surrounding electronic and social media processes in clinical practice, including the growing use of smartphone mental health applications;
- Identifying prudent decision-making protocols and analytical skills for dealing with modern legal, ethical, and risk-management situations and dilemmas;
- Understanding current legal and ethical trends in modern clinical practice;
- Understanding licensing board practices, including grievance procedures;
- Understanding professional malpractice issues and practical tools to avoid conflicts with clients;
- Increasing the ability to recognize and ethically address relevant diversity, multi-cultural, and social justice issues in today’s clinical environment.
