Empowering LGBTQIA+ Youth through Foster Care
Oregon Community Programs is thrilled to introduce a groundbreaking initiative for foster youth in Oregon: QUEST – Queer, Unity, Equity, Safety, and Trust. QUEST uses a tailored approach within Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCO) to focus on the distinct needs and values of LGBTQIA+ youth.
We are seeking affirming foster families who are ready to nurture and safeguard the health, safety, and well-being of these remarkable young people. Providing stable, supportive, and welcoming environments for LGBTQIA+ adolescents is crucial. Our goal is to create spaces where youth can flourish, developing the resilience and self-confidence they need in navigating toward successful adulthood.
LGBTQIA+ youth are significantly overrepresented in the foster care system, often facing unique challenges and vulnerabilities due to discrimination, rejection, and a lack of understanding of their identities. Historically, these youth have been underserved, with many experiencing higher rates of homelessness, mental health issues, and substance abuse compared to their non-LGBTQIA+ peers. This disparity underscores the critical need for targeted programs like QUEST, which prioritize the well-being and empowerment of LGBTQIA+ foster youth.
Living with foster families who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community or affirming allies can offer invaluable benefits. These families offer any combination of personal experiences, critical awareness, and an openness in learning and navigating challenges that LGBTQIA+ youth face, creating a safe and understanding environment where youth can freely express their identities.
